KAAGNY responded to the call in May 9 stating that the Korean Language ESL program in New York Charter School was in danger of losing its funding. On May 29th, KAAGNY president Ha visited the school and met with its principal Dr. Ben Schuman. In concert with ad hoc committee formed by current and past Board of Education members and teachers, i.e. In Ja Kim, Hwang Yong Lee, Hyun Ju Kwon, Kyung Hee Lee and Sylvia Huh, the school was convinced that the Korean Language ESL Program was a vibrant part of their curriculum benefiting all of the student body.

The committee participated in the school’s “cultural night” and continued its effort to save the program. Representing the Korean American community, KAAGNY expressed our unyielding support for this program, and what the Korean Language program means to our community to the school officials. We are happy to report on June 22 we received a report from Ms. Kyung Hee Lee that the school has finally decided to maintain this program. KAAGNY is proud of the part we played in this good news.

KAAGNY is also supporting the works of Korean Language Association which has worked so hard in the fast 3 years for the establishment of Korean Language program as one of the official foreign languages in New York City Public School system.
